Do school cleaners need an Enhanced DBS check?
Cleaners working in schools, and in regular contact with children, generally require an Enhanced DBS check; where the role is 'regulated activity' with children it needs the Enhanced check with a Children's Barred List check (gov.uk). In Scotland this is the PVG scheme via Disclosure Scotland, and in Northern Ireland an Enhanced AccessNI check. Term-time or out-of-hours cleaning?
Most schools want daily cleaning after pupils leave, plus holiday deep cleans. We flex to your calendar: out-of-hours and early-morning cleaning during term, and intensive deep cleaning, floor stripping and deep cleaning during school holidays when the building is empty. Lone and early/late cleaners are managed to HSE guidance (HSE INDG73).
Infection control and washroom hygiene in schools
Schools concentrate touchpoints — desks, door handles, light switches, IT equipment and toilets — that spread seasonal illness. We use the BICSc four-colour coding scheme (red for washrooms, blue for general classrooms, green for food areas, yellow for medical/first-aid rooms) to prevent cross-contamination (BICSc), with COSHH-assessed products (HSE COSHH).
