Ductwork and ventilation cleaning is the internal cleaning and hygiene management of general ventilation systems, worked to the TR19 Air standard. Optus Glean UK cleans ducts and air handling units nationwide, removing dust, allergens and mould spores against measurable benchmarks, and issues verification and reporting so the system's hygiene is documented.
What TR19 Air is
TR19 is the building-engineering industry's recognised standard for the internal cleanliness of ventilation systems, published by BESA. It was split into two parts: TR19 Grease for kitchen-extract fire safety, covered by our TR19 kitchen extract cleaning service, and TR19 Air for general ventilation hygiene. TR19 Air was released on 15 April 2024 and addresses the internal cleanliness and hygiene management of general ventilation using quantifiable, measurable benchmarks. Our TR19 Air guide explains it in full, and our TR19 explainer covers the grease side.
Why ventilation hygiene matters
General ventilation ductwork and air handling units accumulate dust, allergens and mould spores, which the system then circulates through the building, degrading indoor air quality and comfort. Cleaning to TR19 Air removes that build-up and restores designed airflow, which also helps ventilation-linked equipment run efficiently. It is a natural companion to our industrial cleaning and server room cleaning, where airflow and particle control are critical.
How we clean and verify
We survey the system, install or use existing access points, and clean ducts, grilles, diffusers and air handling unit internals, then verify the result against TR19 Air's measurable benchmarks rather than relying on a visual glance. Every job carries a method statement and risk assessment, any biocides or products are controlled under our COSHH procedures, and access at height is planned under the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
Your hygiene record
After the clean you receive a report documenting the areas cleaned, the verification results against the TR19 Air benchmarks, and before-and-after evidence, giving your facilities team and any auditor a clear record that ventilation hygiene has been managed, alongside the grease compliance from our TR19 kitchen extract service and the wider context in our TR19 Air guide.
